A. Introduction
1.
As in any organ system, numerous diseases may occur in the pulmonary system.
2.

We will mention only the most prominent ones, in the upper respiratory tract and, on the next page, in the lungs.

B. Disorders of the nose and paranasal sinuses
1.

Inflammations of the nasal mucosa are of course all (unfortunately) well-known and common. Usually caused by a virus.

2.
Allergic
conditions, such as hay fever. Often accompanied by a runny nose, watery eyes and sneezing!
3.
Nasal polyps.
Doesn’t happen that often, but it is annoying of course, but something can be done about it!
4.

Septal deviation. In some people, the septum can become crooked, either congenitally or due to trauma. That of course prevents normal airflow.

5.

Sinusitis; inflammation in one of the sinuses connected to the nose. Very annoying!

C. Disorders of the larynx
1.
Disorder of the vocal cords, such as a tumor. Can be both benign and malignant
2.

Nodules (epithelial proliferations) can also occur on the vocal chords , especially in (professional) singers, due to overloading.

3.

Paralysis of the vocal cords can also occur, usually caused by paralysis of the nerve supplying it (recurrent laryngeal nerve). Usually only on one side (left or right) so that the patient sounds hoarse but can still talk.

4.
Laryngeal carcinoma
; cancerous tumor in the larynx, often caused by smoking.
